QuarkXpress Practise
Below, I have embedded a practise task by which i created a front cover of a magazine. I followed the techniques of a big magazine company called 'Empire'. They use the same formatting amongst nearly all of there magazines, which has led to a new brand identity just directly driven from the layout and formatting.
- The same empire font; red with a white border.
- Price, magazine issue and date all within the 'M' of Empire.
- Top header; advertising free gifts e.g. Posters.
- Image intruding in on the Empire text; overlaid or underlaid.
- Easy to read and clear font
- Red backgrounds underneath white text; easy to read and eye catching.
- Barcode in the same place.
- 'The Worlds biggest movie magazine' underneath the logo.
- Clear photographs; known actors on the front cover.
- Large photo's.
- Colourful; stands out whilst on the magazine shelf.
Tutorials
1st Draft - Practise
Below, I have embedded my first draft film review when using QuarkXpress. I followed the tutorial above, as to understand the basics of the software. I feel that this was a good attempt, considering that it was the first time that I had used the software. However, some clear issues that would rule this review out from being an actual review within a magazine;
- Verdict is too big, taking up too much room with the stars. Verdict description needed or a web address link to the verdict.
- Runaround text is too big and is causing formatting issues, whereby more text could be entered.
- Title 'Ghost' is not prominent that it is the title of the film.

2nd Draft - Practise
This was my second draft by which I fixed a few errors in the formatting of the runaround text. I also added a new text box for the website under the 'In Cinemas' header and also a fact box over the top of the image. I feel that this is a much more professional film review, however, there are still some formatting issues that I would need to look out for in the final ancillary film review.

Professional Magazine Review deconstruction
I have decided to deconstruct professional reviews from high street magazines; Empire and FHM, this is in order to find any conventions that could be used when creating our magazine review. As many magazines follow the same conventions within all of their reviews, although some magazine companies use different conventions.
After researching some of Empire's magazine reviews, I could not find a review in which they have used a run around, which is usually a big convention in most magazine film reviews. However, I believe that layout that Empire employ will be best suited to our film as they are the biggest film magazine company in the world and the layout is easily recognisable and follows the usual conventions.
Creation of the Magazine Review
Below, I have embedded a screen cast of the creation of the magazine review that we created using QuarkXpress.
Final Magazine Review for Reborn From Sin
Below, is the final version of our magazine review. I believe that we have successfully followed the conventions of a magazine review and in the end have created a professional looking film review for a magazine. Unlike in our practise reviews and examples, we have added real text about our film rather than using Lorem Ipsum.
Updated Film Review
Below, I have embedded the updated version of our magazine review, we have now included a runaround in the main body of text, in which features a quote from the review.
